Why You Need to Become a Vegan
"When it comes to your health, do you feel like your body is some mystery that only your doctor understands? Do you feel like getting older is just another way of saying “falling apart”? What if I told you that, by eating a varied, plant-based diet, you will strengthen your immune system, beautify your skin, increase your energy, and reduce your risk (significantly) of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, allergies, asthma, and almost every other disease? The food we choose is not the only factor in our health and well being, but it’s definitely one of the most important—and, luckily, it’s one we have control over."

Reasons to Eat Vegan Even if Everyone You Know Disagrees With You
"Vegan diets are all the rage right now, but some people still don’t believe they’re the best option. Perhaps you’ve heard of the health benefits of a vegan diet, or know of the truth behind factory farming and even organic animal farms, and are ready to make a change for animals. Some people you know may present every bit of evidence they can find against a vegan diet, while others may just be downright terrified or threatened by it. And why wouldn’t they be? Change is scary, even if it’s for the better and for the better sake of other beings. Like all things, a vegan diet is nothing to take lightly or just do on a whim as a fad. For one, you should remember that a WHOLE FOODS vegan diet is what the benefits are tied to, not one filled with sugary, processed, chemical-laden “technically vegan” foods on the market. While those foods might be cruelty-free, they’re not necessarily the best option.
So for those of you that don’t have support, and from those of us who have been through the criticism ourselves, we’d like to share some reason to still go vegan, even if everyone you know disagrees with you. And while you have to make the decision for a personal reason, and be sure to do it without missing out on nutrients, we’d like to encourage you that a whole foods, vegan diet is a great way to go.
Here’s why:"

Why the Man Who Brought Us the Glycemic Index Wants Us to Go Vegan
"Dr. David Jenkins’s glycemic index revolutionized the diet industry. His isn’t a household name, but the diets his research inspired certainly are: Atkins, The Zone, South Beach, Sugar Busters and the G.I. Diet, to name a few. Along with laying the scientific groundwork for wildly popular lower-carb diets, Jenkins’s work on international committees has influenced dietary guidelines issued by the World Health Organization, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and national diabetes associations around the world. His research demonstrated the statin-like cholesterol-lowering power of what he coined the “Portfolio Diet” and he helped create the President’s Choice Blue Menu line of healthier food products in the hopes of reaching even more consumers.
It’s fair to say Jenkins has had a profound influence on how and what we eat. And now he wants us to radically rethink our diets once again.
This time, though, he may meet a little more resistance: If it were up to Jenkins, he would have us all give up meat, fish and dairy and embrace veganism."

Finding Community as a New Vegan
"There is no time like the present to go vegan—with people becoming more conscientious about the treatment of animals and their health in the past few years, traditional restaurants and the media have noticed. Veganism is no longer a foreign concept. There has been a recent surge of establishments offering meat free dishes, completely vegan restaurants opening their doors, and new vegan products hitting the shelves. Even so, when you first make the switch to veganism, adjusting to the new lifestyle has a learning curve and may even be lonely, especially as a teenager living without much control over your environment. The most valuable piece of advice for making this transition smoothly is to find a community and interact with other people who can relate. Finding a group of like-minded individuals, or even just a friend or two who share your ethics and drive to do something can make a world of difference."

Protein in the Vegan Diet
"Some Americans are obsessed with protein. Vegans are bombarded with questions about where they get their protein. Athletes used to eat thick steaks before competition because they thought it would improve their performance. Protein supplements are sold at health food stores. This concern about protein is misplaced.
Although protein is certainly an essential nutrient which plays many key roles in the way our bodies function, we do not need huge quantities of it. It is easy for a vegan diet to meet recommendations for protein, as long as calorie intake is adequate. Strict protein combining is not necessary; it is more important to eat a varied diet throughout the day."
